What to Do and to Avoid With Window Fashions

At Blind Builders serving Feasterville, many of our clients tell us that they’re overwhelmed with trying to figure out a look at the window. We know it can be stressful, but over the years, we’ve picked up some tips and tricks for how best to style windows. Check out some of our suggestions below, and be sure to contact one of our specialists for more.

Using Pattern

Pattern can be great for a window if you want to create visual interest and tie the look in to your overall aesthetics, so feel free to explore patterns if you want! DO use complementary designs that have similar scale and tone. AVOID making the look overcomplicated. Adding too many patterns with too many lines, tones, and sizes can be jarring and off-putting, so be sure to have a cohesive concept.

Drapery Mounting

How and where you hang your drapery can vastly impact the room’s overall look and feel. DO mount the rod well above the window (potentially all the way to the ceiling) to make your space seem more sophisticated. AVOID hanging drapery right above the frame, which will result in a boxed-in effect that makes the window seem smaller. Likewise, avoid keeping the rod at the exact width of the window—having no extra slide will cram the drapes, crowd the window, and let in less light.

Drapery and Curtain Length

The visual effect created by the length of your curtains or drapes is important. DO go long by having enough cloth to puddle on the floor, just skim the floor, or only be about an inch above the floor (or windowsill for curtains). AVOID skimping on length. If your drapes or curtains are too short, it will stunt the overall look and make your room seem less sophisticated.

Using Natural Light

Rooms feel more comfortable and welcoming if they make the most of natural vs artificial light. So DO let Mother Nature take over. Transform the look of your room, with a treatment that diffuses light spectacularly, such as Silhouette® Shades from Hunter Douglas. AVOID leaving a window untreated because that won’t manage UV rays and privacy.

Creating Your Window’s Look

You have a lot of options when it comes to creating an overarching “vibe” in your room and at your window. DO layer treatments to give your space greater style, depth, and dimension and to make your window feel like a work of art. AVOID taking it too far. Too many layers or too heavy a look will make the room seem cheap vs luxe. Also AVOID settling for “just OK.” If your treatments are outdated, worn, or broken, they will detract from your overall look, making the rest of your room seem shabby.
