Using Color in Interior Design

At Blind Builders serving Feasterville, several of our customers have expressed concern about adding color to their space, mostly because they’re worried they won’t do it “right.” But it can be much easier than all of those fears—we’ve got some suggestions for ways to think about color that might make it more manageable. Check them out here!

How to Think About Color

Color is one of the most important indicators to set a tone for a room. While personal preference does impact color choice, the way in which the color is used is just as important. Here are some ways to think about it:

  • You can go bold. Bright and/or bold colors and patterns are wonderful for primary focal points such as your kitchen backsplash or a standout wall. It is good to add complementary colors throughout the room, such as décor, furniture, and window fashions—custom drapes can help you land on just the right color.
  • On the other hand, neutral doesn’t have to mean boring. Neutral color palettes are classic and timeless. Further, they add a certain calmness to the area. You can choose from warm neutrals like ivory tones or go with rich chocolate hues. Window fashions like Duette® Cellular Shades are offered in a multitude of neutral colors to enhance a room.
  • Texture is like a color. Slate, wood, woven materials, and stone can bring a room to life and can enhance a color palette or complement it. These textures are perfect to highlight through window treatments, furnishings like end tables, and décor. Provenance® Woven Wood Shades are created from reeds, bamboo, woods, and grasses and are available in over 80 material and color options.
  • Come to a compromise. If you’re interested in more color than traditional neutrals but less brightness than the bold hues then the best colors for you are the “pseudo neutrals”, like blue-gray or olive tones. Smoky hues, gray bases, and silver tints and patterns can help create a beautiful aesthetic.
  • Remember the accessories. An entire color scene can be built around a single piece of furniture or art. Custom upholstery to revive and old sofa or window fashions as a focal point are great ways to bring energy to a space. With the Fabric by the Yard™ program from Hunter Douglas, many window treatment fabrics are available for purchase separately, so you can create throw pillows, valences, or other finishing touches that will perfectly match your window.
