Block Light Coming From the Sides

At Blind Builders here in Feasterville, one frequent question we get is about how to make a room as dark as possible. Clearly, getting some type of blackout treatment is one first step, but often, customers don’t want to go that route and just want to know how to block as much light as possible with the treatment they have. Below, we have a few suggestions for how to block light that comes in from the sides of window treatments.

Layers

Light gaps on the sides of blinds or shades are unavoidable—if the treatment were cut to exactly the size of the window frame, it would rub and get damaged. One quick way to cover those gaps is by layering the window with drapery or side panels, which can also serve to enhance the look of the space by adding depth and dimension. Plus, you’ll create a look that’s uniquely yours while matching the style of the room through your choice of fabric design and color.

Mount the Treatment on the Outside

To avoid that slight gap that’s inherent with an inside mount, hang your treatments outside the frame, which will allow you cover the window entirely. You can mount the treatment on, outside of, or above the window frame, blocking the light gaps (although you might still have a little bit of glow through there). An extra bonus with this style of treatment mounting is that it will make your room appear taller—on top of that, when you fully lift the treatment, you’ll have an unobstructed view through your window.

Elements That Block the Gap

With its popular Duette® Honeycomb Shades, Hunter Douglas offers an option that negates the gap caused by inside-mounted shades: The LightLock® innovation. This feature is U-shaped side channels that fit exactly on the window frame and absorb or reflect almost all of the light that would otherwise come through the side gaps.
